When in doubt … take a survey.

First and foremost: Happy Thanksgiving to all American readers! We don’t celebrate it over here but I hope you’ll have a wonderful time with your loved ones, friends or whomever you choose to spend the day with.

Do you know those days where your mind is filled with ideas but you can’t get yourself to follow through with just a single one – rather than jumping back and forth between three or four? If you can: that’s me right now … If you can’t: lucky you! Nevertheless, I felt like posting and when I can’t settle on one topic it’s time to look for some help – rescued by a survey today. These are perfect for inspiring some random thoughts on a Thursday so  there we go!

Thinking-Out-Loud

I’m happiest when…I’m busy and can help others. It’s sounds cheesy but is so true. These past months I’ve been volunteering a lot and sometimes a thanks of simply noticing I’m taking some workload off somebody else’s shoulders is pay enough.

I’ve always wanted to…travel to the US and especially now that I‘ve gotten to I ‘know’ so many wonderful people abroad through blogging.

My family and I… are pretty unconventional [at times to my dismay]. We don’t celebrate Easter, break traditions – just look at our Christmas tree from the past year for proof – and goof around a lot.

I was a terrible…at any of the creative subjects in school. Whether arts or music – I really didn’t enjoy any of those lessons everybody else seemed to find so much find.

My first job was…babysitting. It was so.much.fun. It actually felt wrong being paid for it when I had been playing and reading bedtime stories.

I could probably eat ____ everyday. Apples. If an apple a day keeps the doctor away – what do I get for eating a minimum of four? Eternal health? I’ll take it!

Pink Lady Apple

I was born on the same day asAdam Lambert, Anton Tschechow and Vincent Klink [German chef].

My all-time favorite movie is… impossible to choose. To name a few nonetheless: Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Mad Hot Ball Room [a documention I’ve watched a million times and urge you to watch if you haven’t!] and – seasonally fitting – Love … Actually.

I do a pretty mean… plank. Honestly, I didn’t know how to answer this but I’ve been told I’m a little insane for how long I hold my planks so that’s that J..

I’m still mad… about several things that went wrong in the past, missed memories and opportunities. But I’m working on letting go and looking ahead instead of grieving.

I met my best friend… in kindergarten. We stuck together like glue until grade six. These days, I don’t have one best friend anymore but several close ones I can trust.

I always knew I wantedto write. It’s my hugest passion and I remember being eager to go to school to learn how to read and write.

I’m not afraid tobe honest. When I don’t like something even if everybody else does I won’t swim with the current. If you’ve been reading my blog for a while you know I’ve touched on a few topics some people considered taboo but not writing them would have felt disingenuine.

I make the bestcookies from scratch. Sorry, uncreative answer but I couldn’t think of anything right now and who doesn’t like baking? Or – in my case – eating the dough?

What's not to love about freshly baked cookies? Tasting the dough might be my favourite part of baking, though.

What’s not to love about freshly baked cookies? Tasting the dough might be my favourite part of baking, though.

I have almost nopatience. If we ever meet I apologize in advance for interrupting you in a conversation – it’s in my genes so I can’t help it ;).

I always cry when Actually, I don’t cry a lot.

I’m nowa Journalism graduate unsure where my future lies …but I hope to… figure out life step by step.

I wish my folksall the best in their lives every day. Health, love and overall happiness.

I believe if everyone was a little more kind in their daily actions the world would be a slightly better place.

I can’t standtwo-faced people. In fact, I’ve had a post on that drafted for way too long.

Whenever

is on I’ll start dancing.

Happiness-inducing today: A good conversation.

Pick a few of these and answer them yourself. Like: who shares your birthday? That was such an odd one for me because who ever looks that up?

Have yourself a merry little Christmas [survey].

Seen, snagged, … that’s what I just had to do when I  spotted this survey over at Amanda’s. Reminiscening past Christmas celebrations surely helps make the holiday spirit resurface at least temporarily – even better if you’re listening to the right tunes while at it.  I’ve filled out the survey before but hey, Christmas happens again every year, too, so why not?!

Egg Nog or hot chocolate?
Hot chocolate all the way! At best made from scratch by my mum with that pinch of love added :). Egg Nog is out of question in anyway due to the eggs but I was actually the weird child enjoying my mum’s egg nog-frosted cakes around Easter years and years ago.

Does Santa wrap presents or just sit them under the tree?
Neither.  Some are wrapped but most hide in bags my mum sewed years and years ago –  we’ve been re-using them every year since.

Coloured lights on tree/house or white?
White lights. It’s fun walking past the houses of others decorating like crazy but constantly looking at that would give me headaches.

Coloured lights on tree/house or white?
No. I’ve only ever heard about that concept and seen it in a few movies. It’s apparently only a tradition in the UK and US??

When do you hang your decorations up?
Is it bad that I don’t have a set date for this? Let’s say around the end of November.

Christmas Eve_dinner_Rotkohl

What is your favorite holiday dish (excluding dessert) what’s?
That one’s easy and my whole family would agree: my grandma’s Rotkohl  [in the above picture]. It’s red cabbage sauteed, braised with seasonal spices, vinegar, sugar, apples and some secret ingredients. It’s so.incredibly.delicious. Maybe it doesn’t sound like much typed out but the fact that I don’t miss the meat as long as I get seconds and thirds of this should tell you.

What is your favorite holiday dish (excluding dessert)?
Right now there isn’t a lot yet and you know we’re this close to Christmas Eve. One wish, however, is a subscription to my favourite business magazine, brand eins. Sounds nerdy or boring? So far from it.

Do you open a gifts on Christmas Eve?
Yes!  We actually open all gifts on Christmas Eve because that’s the main holiday over here. Unless we see other relatives the next day we don’t give or receive any more gifts on the following two days.

How do you decorate your Christmas tree?
Given we don’t celebrate at the same house every year – alternating between my parents’, my grandparents’ and one of my aunt’s houses – it differs every year.  At my grandparents’ it’s a lot of traditional figurines [that I adore], straw stars,  …. Obligatory are only the red candles.

Christmas Tree 2013

Snow? Love it or dread it?
I’m divided about this.  Christmas without snow isn’t really Christmas, is it? But I could do without the dirty mush it turns into soon. Looking at the current forecast I’d better bring out the flip-flops [you know, the ones I don’t own …] OR ask my dad to get one of those snow cannons used in skiing areas ;).

Real tree or fake tree?
Let’s get real: only real ones perceive that complete Christmas-cozy feeling.  We’ve never had fake ones. Getting ours from the hillbilly vendor living far off in the woods used to be the dad-and-daugther tradition we had. Only not anymore now I won’t be able to go home any earlier than 23rd. At least I’ll get to decorate it with my sister.

Do you remember your favorite gift?
That’s a tough one. I got a lot of amazing gifts throughout all those [already 23! – craziness] years. A memorable one was the dollhouse my grandpa built himself – complete with teeny-tiny light switches in every room that turned the lights on.

What’s the most important thing about Christmas for you?
Hands down being with my family.  Especially now that I rarely get to see them in-between holidays.

What is your favourite holiday dessert?
Get ready to be shocked if you’ve been reading for a while because – it’s not chocolate.  My mum’s cinnamon parfait beats everything else. The name says it all: it’s perfect.

Christmas survey 2014_Collage

What is your favourite tradition?
Going on a walk with the whole family – grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles, cousins and my siblings. I’m not sure we’ll see them all this year as we’re celebrating at my parents’ with my grandma and grandpa coming.  The remaining family members live several hours away and I only get to stay until the 27th.

What tops your tree?
You caught me off guard here. Depending on where we celebrate this decisions up to the man of the house. I think my grandpa has some kind of golden star and I’m not sure about my uncle and dad.

Which do you prefer, giving or receiving?
Giving because it’s wonderful to see somebody’s joy upon opening a gift to find something they didn’t expect but that fits them perfectly.

What is your favorite Christmas song?
Another tricky one. We don’t sing the same ones every year – plus they’re German – so I’ll go with those that I’m playing over and over on Spotify.  Two of them are “All I want for Christmas” because it reminds me of the cute scene in my favourite movie [see below] and “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” as we used to sing it in the school choir. So yes, mostly songs that bring back memories for me. Isn’t Christmas time all about the memories??

Candy canes, yuck or yum?
We hardly have any of these over here and the only ones I’ve spotted at random weren’t even vegetarian. I’m a fan of mint flavours, though.

Christmas 2012_house

Favorite Christmas Movie?
There’s just one answer: “Love, Actually.” I’m this close to buying the DVD every year but then refrain because I want it to stay that special Christmas movie. Who knows about this year, though …?

What do you leave for Santa?
Ah, this is going to make me – and likely the whole of Germany – look so bad: we don’t leave anything out and never did. Before you start throwing candy canes at me, though: We celebrate on Christmas Eve and Santa doesn’t come through chimneys around here but enters through the door. Maybe he planned it this way so he’d have more room left in his stomach once he drops the gifts overseas? Which would make us really kind for not tempting him, don’t you agree?!

Do you prefer to shop online or at the mall?
If I had it my way – and that’s how we did it in recent years – I’d enjoy a whole afternoon out with my mum buying presents. Now that I’ll have to go on the five hour journey home via train I had to go the easy route of ordering online and having the packages delivered to my parents’ house.  It takes away from the cheery holiday spirit completely, though. 😦

Christmas card

Christmas letter or Christmas card?
We largely stopped sending cards years ago and while I pondered sending out a few letters this year time ran away from me. I’d rather write surprise letters throughout the year [remind me to start again!], though, when I have more time to dedicate to every single one.

Happiness-inducing today: The helpfulness of my boss. I know what you’re thinking … but hear me out: she’s been really helpful and even lending an ear when I needed it for some decisions I’m currently making. Plus you know none of my colleagues reads the blog so I’m just being honest here because it truly made my day.

And: Should I buy “Love, Actually” on DVD??

The Hip[ster] Survey

Do you ever write that one post you’re feeling passionately about, are anxious to share because you can’t wait to hear others’ opion – and then you run out of time? Here’s the deal: I started working on said post Sunday night, then thought I’d be able to finish it one of the past days because it felt almost complete. Only the a) work and b) perfectionism stepped in. Long story short: surveys save the day so I hope Amanda won’t mind me spilling my thoughts the mustache way. The post is going to come next week so stay tuned.

Thinking-Out-Loud

When I told my sister about this survey – read: when I told her the name of it – she rolled her eyes* and replied “what a hipster name”. We don’t agree on everything but one thing is for sure: this survey’s pretty hip around the blog world lately and I couldn’t not jump on board.Even if I’m the last one [typical]. Nobody in specific tagged me and everybody who tagged everybody like Irina.

mustache-1024x1024

*I don’t actually know if she did because you can’t tell when only talking on the phone but I’m about 99 % sure.

Four names that people call me, other than my real name:

Wow,  this is going to be embarrassing but luckily only if you understand German 😉 .

1. Mausi
2. Westi [cutesy form of ‘sister’ and what my sister and I call each other]
3. Schnecke
4. Puddingschwein [thanks for nothing, Charlotte]

Four jobs I’ve had [not including my current one]:

  1. Secretary
  2. Private teacher for younger students.
  3. Sandwich Artist at Subway.  Fancy name for a job.
  4. Babysitter

Subway uniform

Four movies I’ve watched more than once:

  1. Mad Hot Ballroom [a documentary that I urge you to watch!!!]
  2. Harry Potter [my sister and I collected all DVDs]
  3. Love Actually [a must every December]
  4. How to steal a million  [Audrey Hepburn is one of my idols]

Four books I’d recommend: [too many so I’ll randomly pick four]

  1. The Rosie Project
  2. The Sisters.
  3. The Glass Castle.
  4. Intuitive Eating. It’s a blog world favourite for a reason. I actually got this pre-blogging from a friend who found it majorly helpful in her own recovery.

Admittedly, the accompanying doziness doesn't make a bed a good place to study. But it IS seriously comfy.

Four places I’ve been:

1. Great Britain
2. Dublin, Ireland
3. France – multiple times, in different areas and during different seasons.
4. Malaga, Spain

Four places I’d rather be right now:

1. At my parents’ place to spend quality time with the family. Living too far away for a short weekend visit sucks.
2. Somewhere warm – negative temperatues are not cool,  Germany.
3. In the US where I’m hoping to travel in the not too distant future.
4. Given I’ll likely be at work when you’re reading this: in bed. See #2, too.

Reading in bed

Four things I don’t eat:

1. Meat [for obvious reasons]
2. Fish [ditto]
3. Mustard. Just no. It’s nasty.
4. Ketchup. Don’t hate me. Aside from salsa I can’t think of any condiment I like.

Four of my favorite foods:

1. Apples. One a day keeps the doctor away – what does that mean for an average of five then??
2. Chocolate.  I’m a picky eater in this point,  though.  Dark and unfilled is an almost safe bet in case you wanted to mail me some 😉 .
3. Nut butter: white almond butter reigns surpreme but I’ve been on a serious peanut kick lately, too – crunchy + salted to be precise. Maybe because it pairs so well with chocolate?
4. Legumes. It’s an addiction that slowly built up after I switched to a vegetarian diet. Goes to show our bodies are smart in letting us know where to find the necessary nutrients.

[4.2. Oats. They can’t go unmentioned.]

Nut butter

Four TV shows that I watch:
Woops. .. none, actually.  But I’ll list those that I used to watch and probably will again now it’s getting colder outside.

1. Gossip Girl. Intrigues, good-looking guys and the life of the rich and famous – what more could a girl desire [in a Show]?
2. New Girl
3. Gilmore Girls – wow,  I  apparently watched a lot of Girl -y shows. But there’s nothing wrong with that for a girl,  I figure.

4. ??

Four things I’m looking forward to this year:

  1.  Christmas! Because it means finally being reunited with my family. I miss them like crazy.
  2. Cookie baking with Christmas music playing every weekend in December. <- necessity.
  3. Hopefully getting to catch up with old friends while I’m at my parents.
  4. Continuing to grow my blog.

Christmas Collage

Four things I’m always saying:

  1. Hiiiii.
  2. [This year:] Is it really  [insert month] yet???
  3. Wait … is it actually this late already?
  4. Yeeees. [sometimes stressed the ‘duh, I know’ annoyed kind of way, sometimes the approving].

Pick at least one of the categories above and share your four answers …

and if you haven’t filled out the survey yet: Do it and post the link, too!

Never enough randomness [TMI survey].

Okay, so I’d originally planned a completely different post for today. But after a ten+ hour work day my brain is mush so I’ll resumed the survey earlier than planned. Too much information is some kind of thinking out loud, too, right?!

Thinking-Out-Loud

27: Fears?

Many. Some are existential ones, other everyday life things. Spiders. Snakes.

28: Last thing that made you cry?

Feel free to laugh but the pain it was to find a parking spot in my street the other day. It wasn’t really that, though, but the result of lots of frustration that had been building up all day and just had to get out. Tears. Short but efficient in releasing some stress.

29: Last time you said you loved someone?
Answering this would deserve its own post. To make it short for now.I’ll say I don’t remember.BUT that does not imply I didn’t love certain people. It’s simply not as common to say this over here or in my family at least.
30: How did you come up with your blog name?

When I started blogging I wanted to keep track of my recovery from an ED. Getting up, facing my fears and living. However, I’ve contemplated changing the name because it wasn’t made for eternity [in my mind] – I’d have never guessed I would be blogging for this long and counting. If only I had any brilliant ideas … Help??!

31: Last book you read?

The Rosie Project and you absolutely have to read it. Just trust me. It’s awesome.

book_The Rosie Project

32: The book you’re currently reading?

The Love Song of Miss Queenie Hennessy by Rachel Joyce. I read the first book way back and the sequel was recently published. Given how much I enjoyed Harold Fry I had high hopes for this one but this one didn’t catch me yet and with only a few chapters left I don’t think it’ll turn my mind around anymore.

33: Last show you watched?

It’s been too long but I’d make a guess and say New Girl.

34: Last person you talked to?

My dad. On the phone only but doing what works.

35: The relationship between you and the person you last texted?

Sisters.

36: Favorite food?

Delicious food. Whatever I crave most and eat. Favourites include fruit, chocolate and chickpeas. Not all at once, though…

37: Place you want to visit?

So. so. many. If money was no issue I’d hop on a plane to the US in the blink of an eye. A more realistic one: my parents’ place.

Autumn walk

38: Last place you were?

Only counting places outside my apartment: at a cinema for a short article I’ll write tomorrow today.

39: Do you have a crush?

Real life or celebrity? I have several in the both categories …

40: Last time you kissed someone?

It’s been a while.

41: Last time you were insulted?

Actually, I can’t remember the last time I really was. Jokingly: earlier today related to my height – or lack thereof.

42: Favorite flavor of sweet?
Whatever the question: chocolate is the answer.

Lindt Chili_bars

43: What instruments do you play??

Thanks to my parents insisting my siblings and me all learn at least one instrument: the flute and the alto recorder. I’m still jealous they decided my sister was the one to get piano lessons.

44: Favorite piece of jewelry?

A pearl necklace my mum gifted me for my birthday several years ago. It’s a true classic and while not inherited because that kind of jewelry isn’t my grandma or mum’s style I picked the pearls myself.

Necklace

45: Last sport you played?
Actually, I never played team sports. Like hinted at above I practiced Kung Fu – more specifically because it matters: Wun Hop Kuen Do. My Sifu [trainer] was awesome and I still most those intense hours of training that left me exhausted but happy.

46: Last song you sang?

Luckily, the question isn’t asking for the last song you sang well enough for others to recognize the tunes ;). That being said you could have heard me roar on my way to work today.

47: Favorite ridiculous pick up line?

As coincidence wants I heard a new one just today. Or actually, it’s not one to hear but see and works as follows: text a plane symbol to somebody. No text or other explanation added. Wait for them to reply with something along the lines of “what …???”. Reply: I thought I could land/hook up with you with this. I guess it’s ‘better’ in German but … yes … no words.

48: Have you ever used it?
Seeing as I just learned it today: no yet. Kidding. Not taking that flight 😉 .

49: Last person you hung out with?

Ha! My colleagues.

50: Who should answer these questions next?

All of you. No, honestly, I know these kind of surveys can be life- or at least post-savers for any blogger struggling with writers’ block.

There you go: even more random bits of information you [never] wanted to know about me. Enjoy your Thursday and be back on Sunday for some good good links.

Everything you [n]ever wanted to know about me [TMI survey]

Time to show the drafts folder a little lovin’ and also kill two birds with one stone: Kaila tagged me for this TMI survey waaaay back [please don’t look at the date] and I thought it was only fitting in an effort to become a bit more visible. Also, who doesn’t like a some survey action?! It’s a marvelously fun time filling these in and I hope you enjoy it, too. Note that it’s a long survey so I decided to split it into two parts. Next one to come when the mood hits me.

MiMM_new

1: What are you wearing?

Not a dress for once but – weekend-ing plus writing this at night – the brand new PJ pants my mum has sewn me and that arrived in the mail yesterday.

PJ pants_striped_bed

2: Ever been in love?

Truly and deeply in a this-will-last-forever way? No. Maybe I’m too picky [see #15, too]?!

3: Ever had a terrible breakup?
Break-ups, yes, but none that time and friends couldn’t heal.

4: How tall are you?
All of 5’4. Sadly no amount of stretching can convince the measuring tape elsewise.

5: How much do you weigh?
Does anybody really answer this?? I couldn’t even if I wanted to [but I don’t] because the scale and me parted ways when I moved out from my parents’. Meaning four years ago.

6: Any tattoos?
Now come the huge revealing questions [read: the boring part]: no.

7: Any piercings?
You guessed it: No.

8: Favorite movie couple?

9: Favorite show?
Maybe I’m the only one saying this but: none. Or none that is still on. Gilmore Girls were a favourite after I got hooked but I started late and thanks to not owning a TV I have yet to see all episodes. And hey, who wouldn’t like to have a pajama party with Rory and Lorelai??

10: Favorite bands?
That’s a tough one. I tend to randomly listen to songs but hardly like a whole album. Either way, Coldplay, Maroon 5,…

11: Something you miss?
The carelessness of being a child. Life tends to get more complicated by the year and sometimes I just wish my biggest worries were which dress to put or whom to invite to my birthday.
12: Favorite song?
By now you know I’m not playing favourites so here are a few that brighten my day and bring up memories whenever I hear them:

‘Je veux’ by Zaz.

And this one is long, yes, and probably unusual but I like it a lot. Good good memories.

13: How old are you?
23. Officially one of the twenty-somethings.

14: Zodiac sign?

Aquarius.

15: Quality you look for in a partner?

Charm. Humor. Loyalty. Authenticity. Honesty. And then some more. I can’t deny I’m picky.

16: Favorite Quote?

There are too many to pick just one. But this one is pretty good especially in the context of social media.

17: Favorite actor?
Audrey Hepburn used to be one of my idols growing up. Not just for her acting skills but personality, too.

18: Favorite color?

Tone-in-tone_phone

Coral and shades of red. Except for pants [I don’t really ever wear them] I can’t think of a single basic item of clothing I don’t own in coral.

19: Loud music or soft?
Soft. Loud is making me feel uncomfortable. Especially when running I need to hear my breathing and footsteps.

20: Where do you go when you’re sad?

Outside for a walk. Nothing helps me clear my mind and sort thoughts bouncing around in my head like moving in crisp fresh air. Bonus points if it’s in the countryside.

walk

21: How long does it take you to shower?

Does anybody time that? A rough guesstimate would be a little less than 10 minutes but turning off the shower when massaging in shampoo.

22: How long does it take you to get ready in the morning?

Are we talking the whole routine from getting up to leaving the apartment? Then 1.5 hours. Why, yes, I need my time in the AM though I’m capable of shortcuts.

23: Ever been in a physical fight?

Luckily not. If so I’ll try to channel my knowledge from years of Kung Fu training.

24: Turn on?

Positivity. A sense of humor. Intelligence.

5384d-happyday

25: Turn off?

Negativity. Selfishness. Know-it-alls. People who focus on appearance too much [adding this because I’ve noticed this again lately].

26: The reason I started blogging?

My original reason was my passion for writing and connecting with others but also curiosity. I wanted to see why everybody else enjoyed blogging such a lot – and now I know it.

 … to be continued.

Your turn: Pick a few of the questions and answer them!

Did I successfully accomplish the goal of spilling too much information 😉 ??

Everybody likes food – Part II

Everything starting with part one signal a follow-up so here’s the second slice of the epic food survey I got rolling last week. And just like last week I hope you’ll agree food has the abilty to make our days marvelous and – on grumpy days – bring a little oomph and happiness to them. So rather than telling you about the second part of my move – nobody ask me about the number of boxes needed to stash all of my belongings, okay?! – I’ll talk about food. Let’s get rolling!

Nuts

Nut butter

1) What’s your favorite type of nut?
I like pretty much all nuts. Aside from..

2) What’s your least favorite type of nut?
Sorry to all pecan fiends but I don’t like those. And walnuts are similar so I usually pass on those,  too.

3) What’s your favorite type of nut-butter?
It changes but I always need to have white almond butter on hand for all the tasty sweet treats and savoury recipes I can use it in.

4) Are you good with portion control when it comes to nuts or nut-butters?
Is anybody? I’m kind of glad I’m not anymore. Gone are the days of cutting up a huge apple with a meticulously measured teaspoon of cashew butter.

5) What’s your favorite recipe that involves nuts or nut-butters?
Amanda’s crispy cereal bars are a standby for me and I’ve been meaning to prepare another batch of my Chocolate Almond  Caramel  Bars again soon, too. For savoury fare I still enjoy my spaghetti squash bake a lot. The almond butter sauce adds great creaminess – no need of whipping up a more involved topping with dozens of ingredients.

Almond butter Collage

6) Have you ever tried pea-butter or soynut butter?
We don’t have either of those over here but should I ever happen upon one of them I wouldn’t be opposed.

7) When was the last time you ate nuts?
Not actual nuts but nut butter: I’m sitting here with a jar of almond butter and a spoon right now that I’m composing this post. Talking about food makes me hungry.

8) Is anybody close to you allergic to nuts?
Not to hurt any allergics but fortunately not. I’d be super anxious to accidentially serve cross-contaminated food or eat nuts around them.

9) What’s your favorite way to use nut-butters?
Eat straight from a spoon. The perks of living on my own and not giving a second thought to double-dipping!

Addicted.

10) Do you think nuts are worth the calories?
Yes!!! Years ago my answer would likely have been less decided though I remember lugging around bags of trail mix even throughout my ED. Nutty girl.

Dairy

1) Do you prefer chocolate or white milk?
White [unsweetened] non-dairy milk for me. When I first got into veganism I had a serious obsession with Alpro’s chocolate soy milk though I’ve never had store-bought dairy chocolate milk. Maybe because it wasn’t popular over here when I was a child?

2) What’s your favorite brand of yogurt?
Vegan: Alpro plain Yofu.
Dairy: Berchtesgadener Land Quark [our kind-of Greek yogurt].

Greek yogurt

3) Do you think you get enough calcium?
In between the amounts of fortified non-dairy milk and Greek or soy yogurt I eat I’d assume yes.

4) Where do you get the most calcium from (yogurt, cheese, milk, etc)?
Yogurt. Whether fortified soy or Greek – I consume a lot of both.

5) What’s your favorite type of cheese?
A newfound fondness is for Romadur.  Soft brie-like cheese it is for me. Its creamy meltiness even when cold wins me over.

Cheese

6) What’s your favorite way to eat cheese?
Not the biggest surprise if you’ve been reading for a while: in casseroles. If it wasn’t for those I wouldn’t miss cheese all that much.

7) What’s your favorite flavour of ice cream?:
No. I can’t ever choose one. I tried before and will go with mango as my current favourite fruity flavour still.  The creamy flavour always depends on the offer I’m presented. I recently tried peanut caramel ice cream by a local creamery and wow, that was good.

8) When you eat oatmeal, do you make it with milk, or water?
Usually water. It’s not an ED issue though I’d been wondering about that,  too.  But there’s something about banana-sweetened oats cooked in milk that makes them too sweet (?) for me. The exception are banana-less oatmeal puddings. I always use milk for extra creaminess when preparing them.

9) What kind of milk do you drink?
Coconut is my favourite and in fact the only one I drink plain. I’m not a milk drinker. Again maybe because I didn’t grow up drinking it other than when my mum made her hot chocolate from scratch as a special treat on the weekends?

10) What’s your favorite thing to do with cottage cheese?
Eat plain when I feel like having a savoury snack or use it for frozen yogurt.

Meat

1) Are you vegetarian or vegan?

I’m lacto-vegetarian, largely vegan,  so I decided to skip the remaining questions from this category. You don’t want me to answer every question with “I don’t eat meat”, right?

Drinks

1) What do you put in your coffee?
I don’t drink coffee [yet?].

2) What do you put in your tea?
Nothing.  My favourite is Yogi tea which is flavourful enough on its own.

3) Do you like the taste of water?:
If we’re talking sparkling water: yes.  Water straight from the tap isn’t my favourite.

4) Do you drink enough water everyday?
Absolutely.  In between sparkling water and tea my water intake is high. Insert running to the toilet … often. At least that means getting more breaks at work, right?!

5) What’s your favorite flavour of diet soda?
Orange-flavoured cola.

6) Do you think you drink too much diet soda?
Guilty.  It’s a bad habit I’ve been trying to kick multiple times before.

7) Do you prefer to eat or drink your calories?:
Eat.  I need something to chew on to be satisfied. That’s why smoothies – unless laden with toppings – don’t appeal to me.

Tea

8) Do you drink energy drinks?
A loud no. Just the smell of Red Bull makes me gag.

9) What’s your favorite smoothie recipe?
Does ‘Thin Mint’ banana softserve with peppermint extract and cocoa count?? Because that’s the closest I’ve gotten with smoothies by now.

10) Do you flavour your water (lemon, crystal lite, etc)?
No.

Treats

1) How often do you eat something unhealthy?
Labels are for grandma’s jam jars [though, thinking about it, mine doesn’t actually label hers]. Don’t label food.
For the past months I’ve been making a conscious effort to let go of labeling foods. It has no positive impact on our eating experience and if anything will lower our enjoyment and increase feelings of guilt. So if we’re talking about how often I eat refined sugar/ sweets/ storebought savoury snacks: daily.  Some days more, some days less. I still choose mindfully and won’t buy anything laden with E numbers,  two dozen kinds of sugar or lots of ingredients I can’t pronounce. Long story short: I’d say I eat nutritious food for the most part with some ‘play food‘ [borrowing this term from Intuitive Eating] thrown in.

2) Do you prefer a sweet or a salty treat?
Generally sweet but it really depends on the situation. I’m more likely to stock bars of chocolate than bags of chips, though.

3) What’s your favorite salty treat?
Erdnussflips, tortilla chips or pretzel sticks.

4) What’s your favorite sweet treat?
Chocolate on a daily basis. Ice cream when I’m out with friends because I enjoy it much more with others around.

Ice cream

5) What’s your favorite brand of chocolate bar?
I think this one is obvious to any regular reader: my heart money belongs to Lindt. My grandma on my dad’s side is to blame for that obsession instilled in childhood already. See, I didn’t even have a choice.

6) When was the last time you went out to eat?
My mum and I ate at an all-vegan restaurant around the corner of where I lived on the day of my move.

7) What did you order?

Lunch out_vegan_buffet_July 2014

They serve all food buffet-style so I got a nice plate with a bit of almost everything. Vegetable curry, vegan goulash, a quinoa dish,  red rice, … It was awesome and the first time in ages I ate the whole plate without an ounce of guilt. It’s a pity I won’t be able to go back [or at least not in a long time].

8) Do you tend to binge on unhealthy foods around your house?
Rarely. I wouldn’t consider these once-in-a-blue-moon happenings binges but satisfying cravings I [un]intentionally ignored for too long before. It still happens at times.

9) Chips or popcorn?
Tortilla chips [to keep up with the corn theme].

10) What’s your favorite flavour/brand of chips?
Lorenz. Which I’m sure all of you will know. Not. 😉

Happiness-inducing today: Talking to my grandma on the phone. It had been a long while since we last talked and we ended up chatting forever. All while walking in the evening sunshine.
